Dr. Beth Rapp Young

Professional Summary: Since 1995, Dr. Young has directed the University Writing Center, and extended its services to students and faculty from all disciplines at UAH. She also teaches courses in English and Communication Arts, including advanced composition and public speaking. She holds a Ph.D. in English from the Rhetoric, Linguistics, and Literature program at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, and has taught at USC, Rollins College (Winter Park, Florida), and UAH. She has also done professional consulting in writing and communication for local businesses, and professional editing for the Florida Nurserymen and Growers Association. The Foundation for Human Communication course is a hands-on course for communicators, which emphasizes the application of communication concepts to real-life interdisciplinary situations.

Research Interests: Dr. Young's research has focused on communication between disciplines and discourse communities, both written and oral. She has published articles on popular readership, the reading process, and writing pedagogy. She has also delivered numerous papers at national and regional writing center conferences, disciplinary conferences, and the Conference on College Composition and Communication.
